The History of Civil Engineering
Civil engineering is one of the oldest forms of engineering and dates back to the early days of human civilization as humans began to build cities and structures. Egyptian master builders, or "chief of works", built immense construction project such as the pyramids, templates, and early irrigation systems. Later, Roman engineers created roads, aqueducts, and buildings that remain today.
In the 18th century, this form of engineering was named civil engineering to separate it from its military counterpart. The first known person to call himself a civil engineer was John Smeaton, a founding member of the first engineering society – the Smeatonian Society of Civil Engineers. The first American school for engineering was at the US Military Academy and was founded in 1802.
In more recent times, the term civil engineering has come to encompass many different aspects of the design, construction, and maintenance of transportation structures and building, among other things. Civil engineering includes many specialized sub-disciplines including transportation, construction, geotechnical, water and waste water, and environmental.
